Almost Everything You Need To Know About Hygge
I’m probably late to the Hygge party, but better late than never! While browsing through my Pinterest decor board, I stumbled upon this home decor/lifestyle trend, pronounced HOO-GAH, and realized I’d been Hygge-ing all my life. I might not be a Hygge Guru just yet, but I know almost everything you need to know about Hygge.
Just in case you need it (I certainly did), here’s a cool guy in a hat pronouncing it for you:
According to The Little Book of Hygge:
Hygge is a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience. It’s about being with the people we love, a feeling of home, a feeling that we are safe. Hygge is the sensation you get when you’re cuddled up on a sofa, in cozy socks under a soft throw, during a storm. It’s that feeling when you’re sharing comfort food and easy conversation with loved ones at a candlelit table. It’s the warmth of morning light shining just right on a crisp blue-sky day.
HYGGE IS DEFINITELY 385
Proof positive that we humans are much more alike than different. How delightful to discover my inspiration ideas are already hygge-alicious! Share on XThe Hubster and I recently became homeowners again. After renting for years, I was primed for a dose of Domestic Disposition, and the Hygge Lifestyle fit the bill!
The home-purchasing process was grueling, but after 189 days we finally closed on our safe haven, aptly named Shangri-La (I have a romantic obsession of christening homes with given names).
It wasn’t long after we held our shiny, new keys that my mind wandered to the fun part: Decorating! OO-LA-LA Shangri-La.
Our new home is an adorable two-story craftsman complete with the requisite front porch and a perfect little yard just big enough to enjoy the outdoors without burning the bank on maintenance.
My tight decorating budget doesn’t keep me at bay. One must simply learn to improvise. However, Shangri-La was an absolute clean slate and I knew I had to hunker down.
Once again, I called upon my best friend Pinterest and after much deliberation I focused on my interpretation of “Coastal Elegance”, comfort playing a key role.
My version of Coastal Elegance leans toward seaside, not too beachy, and definitely cozy. I want my home to give everyone a great, big hug.
Shangri-La is still a work in progress, but she’s coming along. My favorite rooms so far are the Library (book fiend that I am) and The Loft.

The Loft is the most Hygge-d room in the house although there are touches throughout and I plan lots more.
TO GET YOU STARTED,
HERE’S A HYGGE CHECKLIST
I think I’ve got these covered! More posts are sure to follow particularly on how I decorate on a budget.
Flea Market Flips, Craigslist, Thrift Stores, Let Go, online Swap-N-Shops, Dollar Store finds…with a little ingenuity these sources are a gold mine for household decorating.

Take that Bembridge Scholars (lol)!
All kidding aside, if you’re in the mood to redecorate and aren’t sure on scheme or mood, or if you feel the need to change it up – instead of hemmin’ & hawin’ that Winter is Coming, why not give Hygge a try?
If it doesn’t work for you, at least you’ll have lots of comfy blankets and candles on hand when the first winter storm comes knocking at your door!
Be Well!

Well look at that, Pier One copied you! Your house looks beautiful 🙂
Aww, thanks for that Sweet Lady. Shangri-La, even now, is still a work in progress. But that’s what life is all about, right — The Journey. Plus I’m addicted to finding bargains which takes time. I’ll be updating my progress more soon!
